Background

Mamata was established in the year 1983 with the initiative and drive of a dedicated group of social workers of Chittagong City, representing various professional groups like Engineers, Professors, Doctors, Businessmen, Social Workers, Teachers and Industrialists.
The Vision of Mamata is Health hazard free and poverty alleviated Bangladesh upholding basic human rights?. The Mission of Mamata is to upgrade socio-economic conditions of the disadvantaged groups of the people and to establish their rights guaranteed by the constitution of the country and International laws/Charters/conventions, where Bangladesh is one of the signatories.
In order to attain it?s ?Mission? aiming towards fulfillment of it?s ?Vision? in the longer perspective and with a view to streamlining it?s journey towards sustainability Mamata has been implementing Multi-dimensional program/projects; e.g. Health, Microfinance, Right based activities (including rights of women, Female garment workers, Child rights, rights of adolescents and youths) water and sanitation, prevention of HIV/AIDS, Control of Communicable diseases including TB and Maleria. Mamata has been exposed to Formal and Nonformal education and disaster management. Mamata has the opportunity to work with many donors, whom include ADB, USAID, UNFPA, DFID, SIDA, GFATM, Grameen Trust, BRAC, Care International, Cairn Energy PLC, Timberland (USA), Care Bangladesh and Anukul Foundation. Mamata has been implementing. Microfinance from it?s own resources and other Programs are donor supported and donor supported with contribution form MAMATA. Performance of Mamata has been acclaimed both in home and in abroad. Mamata received National Population Award 6 times for it?s outstanding success in the field of FP-MCH. Mamata has a vocational training centre for adolescents and youths and a after school support program for poor children. Mamata has been running a cultural training program for Children focusing Dance, Songs and drama in it?s Halishahar Campus. In the Child rights program boy and girls are organizing Child parliament Round Table Discussions and Public hearings with political stakeholders, Cultural programs including Drama Highlighting Child Rights. In it?s program with garments workers, they have been given opportunity for empowerment on Labour rights, alternative livelihood through IGA and wide range health facility either free of cost and or with subsidy. Garment workers are participating and are exposed in mass gatherings, round table conferences with influential stakeholders to focus and fulfill their demands and legitimate rights the children of the Garments workers have been provided with Day Care Centres, Early Childhood development programme and pre-school facilities integrated with cultural activities. We have been providing non-formal education to 22 thousand Garments workers of young one company. Still out of hundred thousand garment workers we are addressing only about 45 thousands by and large. We need new donors supports to undertake and replicate our activities in all the Garments factorities in and around CEPZ approximately employing about 2 million garments workers.
Mamata Heath Program run by own funding has a 10 bed maternity centre nearest to CEPZ having Safe Delivery unit. This centre has been training ANC, PNC and Delivery Care to the Garments workers free of cost and or with subsidy. The maternity remains open round the clock and the OPD from 8 AM to 10 PM to later the need of garment workers in particular and mother of the catchments areas in general. This centre has OT, UGS, Lab Test and Ambulance facility. Further Mamata has a program for beggars titled ?Project Dignity? to mainstreaming the poors from absolute poverty level. Mamata has been remaining a youth Friendly Centre (YFC) in the CMC for the adolescents and youths, drama from the downtrodden segment of population.
Mamata has been a Partner NGO (PNGO) in the UPHCP-I and for its outstanding performance it received performance bonus and ranked one among the three best performing PNGOs. Mamata established 40 City Bed Maternity Centre during UPHCP-I period and till date among the PNGOs, highest number of deliveries and other EOC interventions are done in the CMC per month. During UPHCP-II Mamata retained it?s trend of brilliant performance by delivering ESP+ with in the purview of HNPSP of the MOH&FW;. Under UPHCP-II, Mamata introduced two new programmes : (1) Primary Eye Care Services and (ii) VCT Centre under HIV/AIDs program

The purpose of MAMATA is to upgrade socio-economic condition of the disadvantaged groups of people in Health; living condition, education and IGA to their establish rights guaranteed by the constitution of the Country and International charters where Bangladesh is one of the signatories. Mamata intends to increase service cost recovery, community support and skilled staff with a view to initiating sustainable journey in development arena of Bangladesh.

Mamata is a voluntary, nonprofit, social development organization registered with the different departments of the people's republic of Bangladesh including NGO Affairs Bureau, Department of Social welfare, Health and Family Welfare and Register of Joint Stock Companies and Firms.

Operational Area
Operational area of Mamata consists of Chittagong City Corporation, Sitakund, Boalkhali, Patiya, Anowara, Chandanish in Chittagong District.
Strategy
Mamata adopts the following strategies during implementation of Projects and Programs.

Strength of Mamata
The total population covered by MAMATA is 1.7 million. Mamata determines it?s target groups through Collection of DATA and through Survey as per need as prefixed requirement of Donor/ Development Agencies. Mamata, on the basis of the needs of determined the target group; Mamata makes projections on Service Size and Requirements for Fund, Manpower, Logistics, MSR and equipments. MAMATA has constructed an one storied building upon it?s own land in South Halishahar Ward # 39 under Chittagong City Corporation. Mamata needs to raise it into five storied building to start training unit, a new avenue for Mamata which need 5 million BDT for impletion and to set on motion the venture. Since its inception Mamata has long standing community support in program/ project interventions/ Implementations including supports of the elected responsibilities, formal and non-formal leaders and other stakeholders. Mamata has also established working relationship with Govt. Agencies, Local Administration, Ministry of Health and Family Planning Welfare, MOSW, MOLGRD and with other agencies. Mamata has established well-coordinated network with concerned NGOs and National/ International agencies to supplement and complement in the dispensation of services to the people. Mamata has dedicated, skilled trained manpower having training from both home and aboard. Mamata has established infrastructure from grassroots level to the head Quarter catering the needs of programs/ projects.
