Background

Short Brief on PANGO:

The alarming situation due to the high rate of maternal mortality caused by unwanted pregnancies and septic abortion coupled with inadequate reproductive health care services to address them ultimately led a group of reputed medical practitioners and social workers to establish the Bangladesh Association for Prevention of Septic Abortion (BAPSA) in early 1982, under the leadership late Prof. Syeda Firoza Begum, a renowned Bangladesh Gynecologist of national and international repute. Essentially, non-governmental in nature, BAPSA is a non-political, non-profit and private social welfare organization, and its membership includes reputed persons from all over the country.

Mission of BAPSA:

To improve the reproductive health and well being of the society through providing quality reproductive health care services and create an enabling environment for improving the quality of life of the underserved urban and rural population.

Vision of BAPSA:

* Improve Reproductive and Primary Health Care services
* Provide quality reproductive health care services
* Prevention of Unsafe Abortion and provide PAC service.
* Creating awareness at the community level through health education
* Provide Adolescent reproductive health care services
Governance Structure of BAPSA:

BAPSA is run by a fourteen members Executive Committee headed by President. The Executive Committee formulates policy guidelines and takes decisions on important matters from time to time.

Current Projects of BAPSA:

* Comprehensive Reproductive and Sexual Health Program including MR Services,
* Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Programme focusing on Safe MR and Reduction of Unsafe MR in Bangladesh.
* Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP).
* Demand generation for Safe MR Services and Reduction of Unsafe MR in Rural areas, Bhola District of Bangladesh.
* Study on Incidence of Abortion and Menstrual Regulation in Bangladesh and their Role in Maternal Mortality.
* Strengthening of Capacity and Providing of Youth Friendly Services in the existing RH carre systems of the SRHR Consortium, Bangladesh.
