Background

Shimantik is a registered non-government and not-for-profit organization and it works for the improvement of life status of poor and socially disadvantaged people by undertaking various programs and projects. Shimantik started its journey form Isamoti (Kaliganj Bazar) of Zakiganj Upazila in 1979. The vision of the organization is to provide high quality services and technical assistance support for the undeserved and poor people especially the women and children. The mission is creating an enabling environment for integrated community based social development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of poor.

Main Objective :

? Contain population through provision of maternal and child health and family planning services
? Raise the level of literacy and knowledge, specially among the women and children
? Improve the quality of life at risk population of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB and other communicable disease programs.
? Alleviate poverty through women development and income-generating activities
? Conduct research and evaluation activities in health and education sector

Operations under UPHCP II :

Shimantik has been contracted to provide primary health care and related services under UPHCP II in two project areas i.e. PA01 under Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and PA05 under Dhaka City Corporation (DCC). Each of these areas functions under the respective Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the city corporations. The Shimantik has been involved with this project since its inception.

The project area I (PA01) under SCC covers 18 out of 27 wards of Sylhet City Corporation and area 2 (PA05 under DCC) covers 4 wards of Dhaka city corporation. As per the pre-project census, the health services provided by the project to PA01 under SCC cover a population of 2 52,000. Out of this, 75, 600 people fall under the ultra poor category.

Facilities for Delivery of Services :

For PA01 (SCC), the Shimantik provides the health care services through 1 CRHCC, 7 PHCC, 1 VCTC and 1 PECC.

Achievements :
The Shimantik has been providing health care services on an average of 15000 patients per month for PA01 (SCC). For PA01 (SCC), the average percentages of very poor, poor and paying clients are xx, xx and xx respectively. Since the inception of the project, in spite of steady rise in the very poor and poor category of clients, the Shimantik has been able to provide satisfactory services to its clients.
